The first marriage was between a young, naïve, Miss Julianne Fratell, and a charming but impressionable Christian Jefferson. They met in Los Angeles where Julianne was holding a seminar. Christian asked her to dinner, and then to stay in L.A. and then to marry him. It was puppy love, and it was sweet while it lasted, but like so many impulsive ‘spur of the moment’ gestures, it wasn’t right.
The fighting started three years after the birth of their first child, lovingly christened ‘Matilda’ after Julianne’s mother. Being in the army, Christian was being relocated to a military base in Saudi Arabia. After lots of boisterous, passionate ‘discussions’ Julianne refused to relocate with little Matilda, and all the problems within their union came to light and they filed for a divorce.

The second marriage was between Julianne Fratell and Eric Lentle. Eric and Julianne met at one of Julianne’s health seminars, and somehow ended up dating. Now eight year old, Matty wasn’t too young to object to the name ‘Matilda’ but she was too young to object to ‘new daddy.’ She hardly ever went to see Christian, and she didn’t understand the divorce, let alone the impact of this new man coming into her life.
Julianne and Eric married after a year, and Julianne changed her last name yet again. The Lentle family was complete, with two parents and nine year old daughter. Or so Matty thought. In August Mommy started getting very round in the mid-section, but couldn’t explain to Matty that she and Eric wanted a ‘child of their own’. Julianne didn’t want her facing the reality that she was ‘the child from the bad marriage.’

The third marriage happened when Matty was nine, around the time little Anne Marie was born. Christian met a woman in Saudi Arabia and fell in love with her. Constant long distance calls to Matty kept her up to date on the goings-on, although she only visited for a week every summer, starting when she turned nine. She was happy to know Daddy was happy without mommy, but now all remnants of the relationship that had formed little Matilda were gone.

In a world where one parent is distant, and one at home, a young girl can find resentment towards the family she lives with. “My parents don’t understand me”, “My mother is too controlling” you know the age-old tales of teenage rebellion. When she went into middle-school, little Matilda had a full-on loathing for her birth name. She used the name “Matty”, like she had for years, but to identify with her current favorite half of the family she felt a part of her father’s last name had to be included. Thus the birth of “Matty J.” At first Julianne didn’t approve, but the name stuck and for the rest of middle school and into high school she would be forever called “Matty J.”

During her freshman year, the family expanded once again. This time, from the other side. Christian called late one night with some exciting news.
“Matty, Matty, you’ll never guess.” The excited new father practically screamed into the phone. “You have a brother!” And thus, Matty learned that Brian Andrew Jefferson had entered her life. But of course, only during summers and weekly news update phone calls.

Brian, was most certainly not the only life-changing event of Matty’s freshman year. In a series of unfortunate circumstances, Matty J ended up at the biggest party of the year. It was being thrown by some of the ‘cool older kids.’ Being a girl and insecure, Matty J was easily wooed by Derek Thomas, the coolest senior in school. When he invited her to ‘talk’ and go ‘someplace quiet’ Matty J did not know she was about to fall for the oldest trick in the book. Apparently Derek had found out she was a freshman, and thus an easy target. He had a reputation for being promiscuous but never had it been taken so far. The almost-rape of Matty J. Being a loud young woman, Matty managed to scream for help after she figured out Derek had an ulterior motive being with her. It was almost too late before help arrived, Derek was much larger than Matty and easily overpowered her. The door was busted down before he could infiltrate her innocence, but it was also the moment half the school saw Matty naked.

After skipping a week of school and running out of fake illnesses and reasons to stay home, the truth came out. Julianne was horrified and decided it was time for relocation. Enter Flax, Pennsylvania. A new chance, a new start, and new friends. Having escaped her old life, Matty was ready to start over and re-invent herself in this new place. She was Matty J and she was ready to take on the world.

Matty’s the kind of girl that always gives a strange first impression. More than once have people written her off as a ‘freak’ and walked away. In truth, she can be a bit boisterous and in-your-face. She’s not afraid to speak her mind or act a little weird. These qualities can make her seem odd, but they also make for a fantastic friend. Matty’s caring and sweet when you’re down, and fun to be with when you’re up. She’s spirited and imaginative, childish and whimsical.

Matty can also be stubborn, a quality straight from her mother. Give her a problem
and she won’t back down ‘till it’s solved. Oppose her and you’ll never hear the end of it. She’s not afraid to speak her mind or yell out loud. She’ll tell you what she thinks of you, which isn’t always nice. Subtleties usually float right past her, as she lives in a world of blatant honesty.

Most of all Matt J is known for her sense of humor. She loves to laugh more than anything, always joking around and smiling with her friends. She has a tendency to act like a total goof and never doesn’t do something with the excuse that she’ll ‘look stupid.’
